Theological reflections by RSCJ on the priorities of General Chapter 2008

We all remember with joy the preparation and expectations for our General Chapter: “Our spirituality as RSCJ, dialogue around the fire, candle, well, or table...”, as well as the documents and other outcomes after a month and a half of meeting in Lima during the summer of 2008.

General Chapter 2008, Lima, Peru.
Nevertheless, we were aware that our spirituality is very rich, but that the limits of a Chapter cannot and should not exhaust the theological depth: that is an endeavor for later! For this reason, the 13 or 14 of us who were theologians at the Chapter met several times and proposed a project which was then approved by the whole Chapter.

Together we designed two different kinds of projects:

  • the first, simpler and more immediate, which you have here, consists in writing some short articles that deepen some of the themes presented at the Chapter and probe our spirituality more deeply;
  • the second consists in longer range studies of greater importance that will take shape in time. We decided too to invite other theologians of the Society to collaborate and enrich this collection from their own specializations.
We intend that this be a contribution that will deepen at the same time that it brings a certain theological character to the “priorities” and directions of this Chapter, and something that will help persons and communities in their reading, reflection, and living. We also think that the communication of these articles should not be limited to RSCJ, but rather, we hope they can prove helpful in schools, with Associates and collaborators, and with the many others who are interested in our spirituality.
We believe that this is an important medium for development and deepening of our own theology/spirituality, that will help us to carry on among ourselves an authentic theological and intercultural dialogue, and that it will thus give a certain visibility to the Society.

The articles will be published progressively here. In order to facilitate international exchange based on these readings, we will publish them in the three languages of the Society. We owe great thanks to the RSCJ translators who have undertaken this enormous task.

To enter into the intercultural dialogue, you are invited to interact in Spanish, English, or French by:

  • a brief commentary at the bottom of this article, four lines maximum;
  • a more developed reflection at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it : it will be passed on to us as well as to the RSCJ author of the article;
  • any images that occur to you in relation to this contribution, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it : drawing, painting, photo… respecting the rights of the creator: they might serve eventually for a paper edition.

In any case, do not forget to specify the article to which you refer,
As well as your contact information (name, email, country…)

Many of those who have written the articles were in Lima, others not, but together we have formed a team. Another group of RSCJ has labored at the translations, and to all of them we are very grateful. We also wish to thank Claude Deschamps (web) and Margaret Phelan (Archivist General) for their wisdom and help in editorial and technical matters.

We are sure that Madeleine Sophie accompanies us in this work of making more visible the love and mercy of God in this world so in need of them.

    English: The fact of writing on 'community' is counter-cultural in todays's world, I believe. Kathleen's article seems to be more than research; it is the fruit of years of prayer and reflections. It speaks to my heart and I wish to thank her for inviting all of us to go with her on this journey of profound discovery of Sophie's heart.
