In less than a month the annual DPI/NGO Conference will take place under the title Advance Global Health: Achieve the MDGs. After Paris (2008) and Mexico City (2009), it is now Melbourne, Australia, which will host this premier NGO event. From 30 August to 1 September, hundreds of participants will gather to learn, network and exchange views and ideas on global health issues. The conference is being organized in partnership with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations, NGOs and the Government of Australia. The Society of the Sacred Heart will be represented in Melbourne by Anne Corry, rscj from the Province of Australia-New Zealand.

This is a critical moment to take stock of what has happened during the ten years since the promulgation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in September 2000. With only five years remaining until the target date of 2015, there is a sense of urgency about what remains to be done with respect to all the goals. The General Assembly will hold an MDG Summit in New York from 20-22 September – the outcome of the Melbourne Conference could possibly feed into that process by urging governments to accelerate work towards the health-related goals.

For more information about the conference please visit the conference website where you can find information about the conference program, the list of speakers, round tables, workshops, break-out sessions, etc. This website will be updated regularly so please visit it frequently between now and the end of August.
