Provincial Archivists
Eight English-speaking provincial archivists or their representatives met at the Villa Lante in Rome for five days, March 12-16, 2012 with Margaret Phelan, general archivist, and her two assistants, Ms. Federica Palumbo and Ms. Alice Usai to learn from their expertise and to share experiences. Provinces represented were Australia-New Zealand, Colombia, England-Wales, Ireland-Scotland, Korea-Chinese, Malta, Uganda-Kenya and United States.
We dealt with such questions as collecting, organizing, and preserving documents and artifacts, educating our varied communities to the good use of archives, and working with
provincial leadership. In addition, we appreciated being at the Villa Lante with all its history and together toured its significant places.
We came away with renewed enthusiasm for the task of preserving the past at the service of present and future, remembering the words of Janet Erskine Stuart: “The greatest treasure we have in the Society is the life of each one of our sisters.”
