Latin America and the Caribbean: Meeting of Provincial Treasurers

Guadalajara (Mexico)

Visit to the library of San Cristóbal
From the left : Jacquelin Jiménez, Madeleine Ortiz, Olga Madan y Zulema Pérez.
In prayer, motivated by the text of Luke 4 and feeling that “the Spirit of the Lord is upon us and has anointed us to bring the Good News to the poor...”, we began our meeting with the following Sisters: Mieko Shinjo (Japan, Treasurer General); Bernadette Porter (England/Wales, Future Treasurer General) ; Sandra Cavieres (Chile); Silvia Gonzáles (Argentina-Uruguay); Marina di Polto (Brazil); Silvia Alfaro (Peru); Zulema Pérez (Colombia); Jacquelin Jiménez (Venezuela); Madelin Ortiz (Puerto Rico – Haiti); Olga Madan (Cuba); Guadalupe Müggenburg and Señora María del Carmen Cervantes (Mexico-Nicaragua).

In the “Big House” of Guadalajara we were welcomed by the Older Sisters, who from the first moment made us feel “at home” by their affection and welcome, their interest and constant enquiries about our well-being, and their unceasing prayer.

Among ourselves, we felt from the first moment that we were in a very pleasant atmosphere, which encouraged sincere and profound sharing, from prayer at the beginning of each day to the evening time of relaxation.

With our elderly sisters at Guadalajara

Sharing how we came to the meeting, our expectations, how we felt, how we worked, made us realise that when we share our successes, they increase, and when we share problems, we begin to see that they can be overcome; we feel others are with us and we are understood.

Each Province presented its challenges and obstacles by means of a practical and authentic case-history, and we learned from one another and inspired each other to perform our tasks as a service, giving priority to attention and care for the quality of life of our older and infirm Sisters, and seeking to make Community of Goods another dimension of our being as educators.

The Socio-Economic Analyst, Luis Ignacio Román, brought us up to date on the actual situation of our countries, with clear reference to the present crisis and to the need for consistency and commitment.

This sharing of context was significant when we visited the Community of Miramar. The Sisters and the women taking part in the Project “CRECE” (GROW) gave us an outstanding presentation of their dreams, and how they could make them come true, in this Project of Popular Education, and it was very pleasant to share lunch with them, as with the Sisters of the Community of San Cristóbal, who also let us see their pastoral work; we tasted their delicious “TACOS”.

In Miramar

When we shared how we work, we realised that we do so in wider teams, such as Consultants, Lawyers, Accountants, etc. They and the RSCJ Committee want us to find a more realistic Community of Goods; they help us to defend our rights and property in certain negotiations because they are better acquainted with the Law. Lay men and women are also becoming more closely integrated with us, and help us in the daily tasks of payment and services.

Mieko Shinjo (Japan, Treasurer General)

Because of our concern for the future and our desire to share, we are organising Capital into various Funds which guarantee that we are sharing in solidarity with other men and women.

The practice of discernment in decision-making, especially about constantly increasing the involvement of all the Sisters in the Province, will be our way of setting up policies and criteria for acting in justice and solidarity with those with whom we share life.

As we said good-bye, we felt sad at having to part, but instead of being separated by distance, we are making closer links as sisters, and committing ourselves to keep on sharing and creating networks to tackle together the problems we meet.

On behaf of the group :
