The water festival in Chad, 2009

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (RSCJ) in Chad held the International Day of Water a few days in advance, namely, on the feast of St Joseph, 19th March. What we did was to go around the five villages in the parish of Moulkou that were recently suffering from a water shortage; today they are delighted to have a bore-hole that gives them an abundance of drinking water. |

The project was begun during an assembly of villagers in 2007; an RSCJ from the community of Guelendeng took part. Hearing that the European Community had allowed the sinking of many bore holes all along the main highway, village people in the interior of the country, where there was no water, wondered who would remember them. This concern was taken seriously by the RSCJ Guelendeng community. Inspired by the example of the Missionaries of Christ Jesus, who have sunk 38 bore holes in 4 years, and supported by the same NGO, "Pueblos Hermanos", and the same engineer, Mr Nandjéloum Kodo, the Guelendeng RSCJ found courage to set the project going. |

The process was rather long, but quite simple: 2007: five villages (Mokdomo, Timil, Malandjéda, Milfi, Tchigali) formed their own board of management and presented a written request for the sum of 150,000 cfa (228 euros). 2008: the request for finance was presented to "Pueblos Hermanos", which gave a positive response and contributed half the money needed to begin the work. 2009 (February-March): the engineer, the parish priest of Moulkou and an rscj visited the villages three times: |

1st Visit: Study of the terrain; making people aware of what is involved. 2nd Visit: Construction. A team of thirteen completed the work in 24 hours. The bore was sunk 40 metres or more. "Water's coming through!" What a joy! 3rd Visit: On 19th March we celebrated the festival with them. The photos are not confined to the pump or the smiling onlookers. Around the well you can already see green things growing. And we have prepared for the 4th visit, which will be a training session for repairs to the bores. Each village sends one person so that there will be a repairs team in the area. That's how we celebrated the International Day of Water. |
