A hundred and fifty years of an institution is a milestone that is worth celebrating. We want to come to know this history, a history for the most part silent, formed by the daily service of its participants, who did not receive laurels or homage, but who did their work, as St. Madeleine Sophie says, “in silence and obscurity.” It is a heart story full of names. To relive the experiences of the past, to celebrate them and learn from them, helps us to value them, to be grateful, and above all, to build a more just world and a promising future for the whole Sacred Heart family. |

One hundred fifty years ago, in 1859, the school opened to receive its first seven students, in what was then a pine grove of the little town of |
|
In 1986, this traditional girls’ school became co-educational, and a year later it welcomed an experimental program to bring in students with learning disabilities, of whom a significant percentage are students with Downs Syndrome, with motor and sensory difficulties. Today those students are more than a hundred, full members of the community who participate in all its activities. Their presence in the classrooms is an important factor in their integration into the school, and also contributes to form and enrich the character of the other students. |

What does the school want to continue doing? To educate and shape the growth of the whole person in his or her physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual values; to seek the best balance among those values; to see that each boy and girl discover the values of his or her life, their yearning for transcendence, their “unique gift” to put at the service of a more just and a more human world. In this way of educating, personalized attention to each boy or girl is key, so that they feel both “challenged and loved at the same time”; to continue working to improve the quality of education, of evangelization, and of social programming of the challenges of each day. |
| In sum, we have tried to make this 150th anniversary give us energy for the future: so that it will help to integrate past experience and the desire to progress; so that we will be aware of where we have come from and where we want to go; so that it serve to honor those who went before us and safeguards and preserves the values that have been transmitted from generation to generation; that it serve for reflection that in the shadow of the statue of the Sacred Heart that has been the unshakable witness to the joys and vicissitudes of the institution for more than a century; that we confirm a commitment to maintain a vibrant program of education and evangelization. | ![]() |
