Argentina: From the Theological Formation Seminar for the Laity

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Nothing was organised, no meeting had been foreseen, it was just that I had a deep need to meet the open Heart of Jesus. I went to the Theological Formation Seminar in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the expectations shared by most of those going to the Seminar, but I found much more.

Jesus was there with his generous Heart; I felt his presence in each affectionate embrace from the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, those I knew and those I didn't.

He was present in the immensity and majesty of the sea, sometimes calm, at other times very rough.

I had almost a week there, during which there were many signs of the Heart of Jesus; we were joyful, sharing food and "mate", singing and playing the guitar. He was present in the RSCJ with their particular gifts: the voices of Charo and Paula, the serenity of Lourdes and Aida, Válery, so lively in spreading the Gospel, the young rscj, and the contagious happiness of all the sisters.

The daughters of St Madeleine Sophie do truly the show forth the love of Jesus' Heart, a Heart burning with the fire that marked Madeleine Sophie from her birth.

That fire continues to feed their life, their dreams and mission.

That fire springs to new life in the young rscj like Frank, Yeny and Inés. On some mornings I saw them contemplating the sea, perhaps because of what scripture says, "Be still before God and wait for him". Madeleine Sophie put that into practice.

I can say that today the Society includes young rscj like the ones Father Varin was seeking, who understand God's plan, who have courage to embrace it, and much love in their hearts to carry it out.

Meeting the sisters meant seeing the most outstanding qualities of Madeleine Sophie :

Some of the sisters of the Sacred Heart attending the Seminar :
At the left: Aida Benites (Recently Professed, Paraguay), Vivian Fabrício (novice, Brazil), Lourdes Ramos (Recently Professed Uruguay), Paula Grillo (Young Professed, Argentina).
At the right: Ines Fernández (Novice, Argentina), Valery Jaques (Professed, Argentina), Francislaine Regina de Paula (novice Brazil), Jenny Candia (novice, Argentina), Silvana Ferez (Young Professed, Argentina), Vanesa Peralta (Young Professed, Argentina).
Here we say the novices are in the "time of Nazareth", and the young professed in the "time of Galilee".

overflowing, perpetual joy, and space for silence and solitude. The sisters are generous, simple, austere, conscientious; united in the Heart of Jesus; concerned for others, quick to find the solution to a problem; at ease in communicating and forming relationships.

I saw them throwing themselves wholeheartedly into work and play, clear-minded in their well-timed contributions to discussions, prudent and enlightening others. I saw that they were kind, friendly and passionate for mission. And oh! they do work hard! (well, some are able to work harder than others, but they all go to a lot of trouble.)

Dear Sisters, this seminar was a wonderful bonus for me. Thank you for sharing and distributing your treasures.

I know I shouldn't name people, because I could see that all were ‘One heart and one soul in the Heart of Jesus'. As Helen McLaughlin said in one of her letters [Holy Thursday 1993], this motto "has become the pivotal expression of our lived story as Society. It is like the blood that flows through the body of the whole Society, giving it life, purifying it and contributing to the healing of its wounds."

Affectionately,

Saturnina Maldonado

Saturnina belongs to the wider family of the Sacred Heart and lives in Ibarreña, Formosa, a very poor region in the North of Argentina. She is a former member of the teaching faculty of Almagro.
