Message from Kathleen Conan, rscj, to our friends and colleagues :
As Sophie met the joys and challenges of her day, she returned again and again to the heart of Jesus, to continue to let God's love shape and call her. On this Feast of the Sacred Heart, let us pray for one another, that we may renew our rootedness in the God who loves us and that in the spirit of Sophie we may more and more become that Love and share it with others. This year's celebration is marked by a particular event in the life of the Society: the transfer of the châsse of Madeleine Sophie from the community at Rue de l'Abondance in Brussels to the church of Saint François-Xavier in Paris. As we prepare for and live into the graces of this feast, I invite each of us to bring to our prayer and reflection something of our knowledge of Sophie as well as our imagination, so that she might speak to us today of our call to live the love of the One whose heart is open and pierced................. |
Throughout her own journey Sophie would return to the heart of Jesus, longing to sink her roots more deeply in its soil, to absorb water and nourishment from his love.................
As she did in her own time, (Sophie) calls us today to sink our roots into the cultures and worlds that are shaping our century, to be present where the hearts of our people are being pierced, where the wounds of creation and the cosmos are crying out for response. She encourages us to refine our capacities for perspective and discernment, that we may understand the interconnectedness of our choices; she inspires us to develop the sensitivity and the commitment to draw forth in these settings the face of God, the resources for love, the capacities for life built on justice, peace and the integrity of creation.................

At the church of Saint Francois-Xavier, Sophie is no longer in a convent, a house of our own, but in the midst of a city, among believers, lay and religious, who gather to worship, to create community, to seek counsel and help, to engage in projects of the Church's mission. It is from this space that her spirit of the loving heart of Christ continues to flow. Since Vatican II, we are most often in ministry with lay people with visions and hopes similar to our own, committed people who carry the mission with us and for us. In such collaboration we have come to know the new life promised in the paschal mystery: in new relationships, new opportunities for growth and new places for sharing God's love................. In light of her broad vision, it is fitting that Sophie be in the church of Francis Xavier, Apostle to the Nations. She herself dreamed of going to the far reaches of the world, a dream that took flesh in Philippine and her companions and continues today in newer areas of our mission. Beyond geography, she insisted that the education of her sisters and of the students reach into the depths of our heritage and be open to the breadth of new worlds being explored in science, in the understanding of the human person, in the awareness of various cultures and their ways of living and thinking. |

In our own day, our sisters are ministering with people on many frontiers of life in rural areas and in our cities, empowering people, especially women and children to develop the capacities and confidence to create their own lives. We live and work with those whose whole lives are marked by poverty and those facing it for the first time. Some of us are exploring moral questions raised by new possibilities in politics, economics and science; others are contributing to ongoing developments in theology and pastoral care. Some of us minister with those with psychological wounds; many of us accompany people in their spiritual quest. |
On each continent we work with young people, families and educators, to help the next generation to create the interconnectedness and communion our world needs. In these and many other ways, we live Sophie's vision of a universe filled with women and men whose living and loving give praise to God!
