Artwork by Bethanie Sulleza District of Philippines (Click on an image to view a larger version) | Bethanie Sulleza is an architect from Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, Philippines. Born in 1976 at Iloilo City, Beth is a graduate of BS Architecture at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Quezon City in 1998. Bethanie started her private practice in Iloilo in 2001, where she also taught in the College of Engineering & Architecture at the University of San Agustin. Duchesne Community welcomed Beth to the Society as postulant on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, June 3, 2005. She is currently teaching Environmental Education to a group of Out-of-School Youth at ERDA TECH (Educational Research and Development Assistance) School in Pandacan, Metro Manila. Expressing herself in colors and shapes are Beth’s ways of articulating insights gathered from her present encounters, study and ministry. | “This painting entitled “Busag” Waray word for “white” is dedicated to my friend Me-ann, a girl in Samar. Kids tease her “Negra” and she is always amazed to see people who are “maputi” (fair). The painting addresses a reality for me and that is, no matter what “color” of skin we have, we are all made of the same core. | | On another level this painting is also an expression of my reflection of a reflection by Menchu Hornedo rscj. “Mary,” according to Menchu, “exercises authority over Jesus in John’s ‘Wedding at Cana’ because she knew that the Spirit was with her”. For me, this painting speaks of the same Spirit that is in each of us. It is an invitation to see goodness in each person and serves as an encouragement to be bold and to trust the Spirit that is in me.” |
