Page 4 sur 6 Models of interfaith education may also include: 1) values, leading to a service-oriented commitment; 2) diversity, understood both academically and experientially; 3) peace building, to address violence in society and the world at large; 4) community, building interfaith understanding within community; 5) ecology, a holistic view of the relationship between humans and the earth and our interdependence; 6) self-cultivation, allowing one’s personal religious orientation to be enriched, and 7) innovative educational modalities of communication, including new technologies and artistic expression. The first 3 consultations studied ritual, worship and community; they examined methodologies and best practices, looked at barriers and challenges and sought to foster relationships and build networks. The Barcelona Consultation specifically considered Interfaith Education in Different Contexts; the Power of Commitment; Interfaith Education in Community and Justice; the Wisdom of Listening and Education that Transforms. In the Post Barcelona period, a fourth Consultation has examined the Role of Religions in Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Using the UN MDGs as a touchstone we are aware that there is a lack of political will in the wealthy nations, particularly in the USA, to achieve these goals for the eradication of poverty in the world. Consequently we are looking more closely at the power of religion to transform consciousness toward awareness of our responsibility as citizens of the world. Consideration of how to expand our own consciousness toward global citizenship leads us to consider the universal mission of the great religious traditions for justice and peace beyond national boundaries; in a word, we are looking at religion’s responsibility to educate for global solidarity. We are questioning whether the particularist aspect of religions has been overemphasized to the diminishment of the global mission and we are finding that interfaith education is well positioned for this task of educating for global solidarity..
