Because education is:

  • A universal human right
  • The key to diminishing poverty and bringing about sustainable human development

Because education for all is:

  • Possible if governments have the political will and make resources available

Remind government officials of their pledge to ensure that girls have equal access to primary and secondary education by 2005.

The following sites provide additional information, resources and possible actions:

2005 IS A KEY YEAR

“2005 is a year of great opportunity. If everyone who wants to see an end to poverty, hunger and suffering speaks out then the noise will be deafening. Politicians will have to listen.”

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

This year there are three important opportunities for citizens to encourage their leaders to take action against poverty.

  • July 6 - 8
G-8 Summit in Scotland, at which the leaders of the world’s wealthiest countries meet to discuss global economic challenges
  • September 14 – 16
Millennium + 5 meeting of the UN General Assembly, reviewing progress made since September 2000 on the implementation of the the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals, and also dealing with UN reform.
  • December  13 - 18
Sixth World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference which will discuss international trade regulations and standards.

The Global Call to Action Against Poverty launched at the World Social Forum is an alliance of NGO’s committed to helping world leaders keep the promises of the Millennium declaration. If we had the political will it would be within our power to put an end to poverty.
