The alarm clock Imprimir E-mail

I forgot to set the alarm before going to sleep, and the next morning I woke up late. When this happens my day seems to go all haywire, and that day was no exception. I began to reflect how something as trivial as moving a button before sleeping could have such an effect the next day. And I said to myself…

How dependent I have become on the alarm clock! When I was a child, it was my mother who came to shake me in the morning (and how often she had to call me before I emerged from under the blankets!) And she reminded me of so many things during the day. Did you wash your hands, your teeth? Have you prepared your books for school? Did you finish your homework? It is time to go to the doctrine class… Because really and truly, if a mother does not remind her children about these things, the kids would certainly not bother much about them.

And I went on thinking… in the eyes of God we are like little children. He has to continually remind us who we are, what we mean to him, why he created us, what he wants of us; he rouses us from apathy, energises our lack of enthusiasm. He reminds us that he is a merciful Father, always ready to welcome us back when we stray from him, and more than that, he makes a feast when we return to him after our falls. He shows us his Pierced Heart, suffering again wherever and whenever a person suffers.

The alarm clock of God is not made of metal or plastic, and it has no buttons that he has to remember to push. His alarm clock is the nature around us, which, for those who have eyes to see, is continually proclaiming the presence and love of God. God wakes us up through all that happens to us and to others, through sickness and disasters. He speaks through the mouth of our friends and of those with whom we are not on such good terms. He has a message for us through his Church, the sacraments, the liturgy. And above all, he speaks to us through Sacred Scripture, the written Word of God.

Yes, God uses many alarm clocks with me… but, when I hear his bell ringing, do I reply, or do I go on sleeping?
