Japan: In communication with people Print E-mail

On October 29 and 30, 2004, there was a unique exhibition and performances in Hiroo, Tokyo, where the University of the Sacred Heart is located. The main gate of the University leads to a residential area but its back entrance opens to Hiroo Shopping Street. There has been a movement among the University students since a couple of years ago to bring about a friendly relationship with Hiroo shop owners and, together with them, to contribute to the promotion of the area. The street is narrow-one way road flanked by side walk and shops on both sides. Two-storey wood and plaster houses are gradually being replaced by concrete buildings but the area still retains the atmosphere of some decades ago. The last time when the Shopping Street was having a festival, students had a stall to sell Fair Trade goods. Students, especially resident students, are not only good customers, but are looked upon with a new eye.

This year, St. Madeleine Sophie Center of the University encouraged the students to send in their art work to Hiroo Art-ON. The Art Club, the Photography Club, the Handicraft Club and other clubs and circles responded. The Guitar Ensemble performed, too. The venue was the lobby of a restaurant.

Grade 10 students of International School of the Sacred Heart located next door to the College Campus, created ceramic models of Hiroo shop fronts from one end of the street to the other, guided by their teacher, Mr. Steve Tootell, Head of Performing Arts Department. Mr. Tootell himself exhibited his pottery and another teacher her painting. The venue was at the second floor of the shop of a picture framer.

Quite a number of foreigners live in Hiroo area but the biggest daytime foreign population perhaps is that of the International School, the enrollment being 520 students from 47 nationalities in May 2004.

The objective of Hiroo Art-ON is to widen the circle of communication among people who ordinarily do not get together and to create a more attractive Hiroo through arts -painting, photography, music, performances, etc.
