The Icon of Christ, Lamb and Shepherd from the chapel of the Sacred Heart novitiate in Warsaw, Poland, leads us into the mystery of the Incarnate Love of God revealed on the Cross. The actual form of the Cross symbolises cosmic wholeness, attracting us to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth of this Mystery (Eph 3, 7-18). Christ is in the centre of a circle which is the colour of bread. This leads our thoughts to the Mystery of Eucharist, Living Heart of the Universe, and source of true life given by Christ. The pierced side of Christ speaks about the Wounded Heart, a foretelling of what awaits the disciples who will decide to follow Him. The wound is hardly visible so one can see it only with the eye of the heart. Compassion for the sufferings of others is the fruit of this contemplation. Jesus, through his example of a faith at one and the same time strong and free is shown as both the Lamb without stain of sin (symbolised by the white robe) and the Shepherd who reigns from the Cross. The meaning of this Icon is expressed on the branches of the Cross: The Lamb will be their Shepherd and will guide them to springs of living water (Rv 7,17).
