Saint Brigid was born in Kildare, Ireland. (Her father's surname was Dubtach, what we now call Duff or Duffy).

Brigid's Fire is a perpetual flame which Brigid and her nuns kept alight. The fire is kept alight now by the Brigidine Sisters in Kildare.

Celtic people honoured fire. It helped them think of the power and presence of God.

In the morning they would pray:

"I will kindle my fire this morning
in the presence of the holy angels of heaven.
God, kindle thou in my heart within
a flame of love to my kith and kin,
to my foe, to my friend,
to my neighbours all,
to the brave, to the knave, to the thrall.

In the evening they would pray at their fireside:

"As I save this fire tonight
even so may Christ save me
till the dawn of the day shall be"
