Formation of the heart as mission
Helen Curmi rscj at the Retreat Centre, St.Julians' Malta.
Since
1980 when the last group of rscj's vacated 'enclosure quarters' to move
into smaller communities on campus or inserted among the people, these
premises were gradually converted into a Retreat Centre.
Situated
centrally on the school campus, it has served a very good purpose for
our own students as well. For the past nine years we have had annual
day retreats 'Christ Encounters' for each class (11 - 16 year olds). We
have a different topic for each year group - selfishness
? self-improvement - friendship - adolescence and values; looking back
at their Christian education of 11 years, and looking ahead to the
future.
Some parents and teachers act as godmothers for the day for each small group, helping to animate during discussions. All parents write a letter to their daughter telling her how much they
love her and encouraging her to benefit from the day's experience, this
they read during the day. Self expression during class discussion is
given much importance. The day ends with a Eucharistic celebration.
Weekly
meetings have also been held during lunch break for voluntary groups
such a 'Growth Group' 'Prayer and meditation'. Short mid-week 'Live -
Ins' are the highlight of such groups for those who persevere for most
of the year.
I have worked with young people for many years now, and it is through
this particular pastoral work and guidance in the faith; through
formation of the heart that I have been enabled to live the Society's
mission and charism. St. Madeleine Sophie's love and concern for
young people has always been an inspiration to me. Contact with people
has been a means of helping them become attentive to God's love and
spreading it.
An added grace has been that some parents and teachers who help with Christ Encounters have joined our Associates.
