21 November: why is this date celebrated as a special day in the Society of the Sacred Heart? Print E-mail
25 Aug 05

It is both the feast of the Presentation of Mary and the birthday of the Society of the Sacred Heart

This feast recalls to our minds "the entrance into the Temple of the most Holy Mother of God" at the age of three to be dedicated there until her marriage. In the Eastern liturgy, the story of the presentation in the temple is understood as an illustration of the truth that, throughout her life, Mary was totally dedicated to God and that this dedication was rooted in a contemplative faith.

In the Society it is "the original feast day", since it was the day of the first consecration of Madeleine Sophie Barat, November 21, 1800. Mother Barat wrote in her journal:

Some days afterwards, it was the fest of the Presentation of Mary, an important fest in our Society because on that day the first rscj made their consecration in Paris… (p.47)

Saint Madeleine Sophie and her companions made their consecration in front of this picture, now kept at the Mother House in Rome and called “the Madonna of the Society”.
