July 18 - From the rscj in Indonesia;
Thank you for always being with us! The strength and cor unum of our internationality gives us the courage to live with pain. Yesterday, the first earthquake shook South Jawa at 15.11, the people did not panic till there was another at 18.45. This one was accompanied with a tsunami. Reports so far have said 283 have died and over 500 are missing. The panic remains as another earthquake is expected to follow. This was the news of last night.

People in Jakarta did not really feel the tremors except in some places. We shall keep you informed of further developments and we count on your prayer. Those who are in relief work are tired but have not lost hope. Our work in Yogyakarta is still going on.....

From the Province of India:
On behalf of the Indian Province, I  want to express our heartfelt gratitude or the love and concern you have expressed through your messages after the train attacks. It was an experience of horror and shock as we listened to the news and saw scenes of the tragedy. Even as we were watching the news we kept hearing of more and more attacks. Our Provincial House is near Khar, the scene of one of the first attacks. Telephone lines were down so it was difficult to get in touch with the sisters on the Sophia Campus to find out if all were safe.  By the grace of God none of the RSCJ, their families or staff were affected. Our hostel students were frightened as they are so far away from home.  What was really heartening to see was the generosity and courage of the people who helped even before the police arrived. Thank you for your prayer and your love. Let us continue to pray that the Lord may touch the hearts of those who placed the bombs and plan these tragedies.
Pratibha rscj, Provincial

From the rscj in Indonesia

The earthquake was horrible. Today the death toll has gone over 5,000. Indonesia surely didn't need that.

Gerardette Phillips rscj has gone with a group from Atma Jaya Hospital. Their focus will be babies and children who have lost parents. The doctors say the physical needs are being met - barely - but the wounded adults need people to talk to, too.

Gera will help with that perhaps for three weeks. The situation is so fluid it is hard to give details. Those who have good TV coverage may know more than we do!

Thanks for your prayers. And very much love,
Nance O’Neil rscj
